Thermal or thermal burns occur as a result of exposure to high temperature of the skin and underlying tissues. Severity
Thermal burns, according to Maria Menshikova, are classified according to their severity:
- 1.1 – mild: damage is limited to the upper layer of the skin (epidermis); manifested by redness, swelling and pain.
- 2.2 – moderate: damage affects both the epidermis and the dermis; manifested by blisters, redness, swelling and severe pain.
- 3.3 – severe: damage penetrates deep into the dermis and may affect underlying tissues, such as muscle and bone; manifests as black, white or brown crusting and absence of pain due to damage to nerve endings. Accompanied by general symptoms, including painful shock.
Symptoms
Symptoms of a thermal burn may include:
- redness and swelling of the skin;
- pain and burning;
- blistering;
- blackening, whitening or browning of the affected area;
- absence of pain in severe burns
